SEOUL (Reuters) - The South Korean military said that North Korea launched multiple short-range ballistic missile tests into the sea on Thursday off the eastern tip of the Korean Peninsula. Not even two months had passed since North Korea's founding anniversary when the country conducted its first missile test. The AFP news agency released a statement stating this.
The Joint Chiefs of Staff of South Korea declared that at 7:10 a.m. on Thursday, it had successfully intercepted multiple short-range ballistic missile launches from Pyongyang into the East Sea and was in the process of sharing and analyzing the information. Close communication regarding North Korea's missile test with the US and Japan, as well as increased monitoring and alertness in case of any new tests.
While acknowledging North Korea's missile test, the Japanese Defense Ministry also verified Pyongyang's ballistic missile launch.
Since July 1, North Korea has not conducted a missile test before. Every year on September 9th, the anniversary of North Korea's founding, the country regularly launches missiles; in 2016, it conducted its fifth nuclear test on the same day. North Korea carried out its sixth nuclear test as of September 3, 2017.
