Washington, DC (Xinhua) The European Union (EU) said on Monday that its allies have shared credible information that Iran has supplied ballistic missiles to Russia, a move that Washington has warned Tehran will do. There are consequences. A statement from the AFP news agency states as much.
Both the accusations and Russia have refuted each other. Officials from Europe and the US have issued warnings, stating that if reports of Iran supplying ballistic missiles to Russia are accurate, this could be a significant provocation by Iran in support of Russia's aggressive war in Ukraine.
State Department spokesman Vedant Patel told reporters, "Any transfer of Iran's ballistic missiles to Russia will be considered provocative in support of Iran's war of aggression against the United States." "We have indicated that we are prepared to respond in the most serious manner possible to the situation in Ukraine."
Last week, the Wall Street Journal revealed that Russia was receiving short-range ballistic missiles from Iran for use in the conflict with Ukraine. The Wall Street Journal was the first to report that Russia and Iranian officials might sign a deal in Tehran in December 2023 to buy ballistic and Fath-360 missiles. Ababil, the Iranian state-owned Aerospace Industries Organization (AIO), is responsible for making some of the short distances.
Based on information gathered from US and European officials, the US newspaper also verified that the transfer might include 200 800-kilometer-range short-range missiles.
