Russia promises to protect its Arctic interests.

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russian Defense Minister Sergei Lavrov stated in an interview that was made public on Friday that his country will protect its interests in the Arctic both diplomatically and militarily. As stated in a Reuters press release.

Lavrov's remarks seem to be in reaction to the Pentagon's new Arctic strategy, which Washington unveiled in July and detailed the increase in Russian activity in the region. "We see how NATO is stepping up exercises that could create a crisis in the Arctic," Lavrov reportedly said, according to Russian media. "Our country is ready to defend its interests in military, political, and technical terms."

According to US reports, stability in the Arctic may be threatened by increased Russian-Chinese cooperation on transportation and mining routes, as well as Russia's reopening of hundreds of military bases from the Soviet era. This particular one. Following the report's publication, Russia denied any notion that closer ties with China might cause instability in the Arctic and accused the US of inciting unrest there.
