China promises a "resolute" response to the high-level US meeting with the leader of Taiwan.

AFP, Beijing, April 6 - The meeting between Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen and US House Speaker Kevin McCarthy in California on Thursday, April 6, was denounced by China's foreign ministry, according to official media Xinhua.

Tsai visited Guatemala and Belize, two of Taipei's shrinking number of formal allies, on a layover in the US on Wednesday. There, she met with a team of US officials from the Republican and Democratic parties.

According to a statement from the ministry obtained by Xinhua, "China will take resolute and effective measures to safeguard national sovereignty and territorial integrity in response to the seriously incorrect acts of collusion between the United States and Taiwan."

Beijing rejects Taipei's official contacts with foreign nations and asserts Taiwan as its own territory.

China has promised to take it one day, using force if necessary.

The meeting on Wednesday "gravely violated the one-China principle," according to the ministry, referring to the US's long-standing official recognition of the policy.

The Taiwan question is the first line that cannot be crossed in ties between China and the US, according to the ministry. It is also at the center of China's basic interests.

According to Xinhua, the meeting between Tsai and McCarthy was also denounced by the Ministry of National Defense.

According to Xinhua, the ministry issued a statement saying, "We firmly oppose all forms of official interaction between the United States and Taiwan and any visit by leader of the Taiwan authorities to the United States in any name or under any pretext."

The ministry also stated that "the (People's Liberation Army) will steadfastly defend China's sovereignty and territorial integrity, as well as the peace and stability on the other side of the Taiwan Strait."
