Washington, DC (Aljazeera), April 2 - In a phone discussion with Sergey Lavrov on Sunday, Russian Foreign Minister Antony Blinken, who is the secretary of state for the United States, advocated the release of Wall Street Journal writer Evan Gershkovich.
The Federal Security Service (FSB) of Russia announced on Thursday that it had detained Gershkovich and accused him of acquiring information about a state-secret Russian defense contractor.
Gershkovich was not spying, according to The Wall Street Journal. The espionage charge, which carries a maximum 20-year prison sentence, has been dubbed "ridiculous" by the White House.
